I'm really pleased I've found the score for this song (Wandering Whistler Music Archives). These days I don't relate to the lyrics as much as I once did, but it's still a wonderfully atmospheric tune. They don't come any better than the late great Johnny Cash's:
"The Wayfaring Stranger" is a traditional folk song of unknown origin. Most likely a negro spiritual.
